Anna and Joan met up for a lovely chat

On the 26th May 2016, Volunteer Connector, Anna, met 83 year old Camden resident, Joan, for the first time. Joan has found herself recently isolated after her partner, Ray, of fifty years, died last winter. Caring for Ray was a full-time role, especially the last few months, and a result, Joan lost contact with many of her friends in the local area.

Joan was a librarian at a local university, a job that she had done all her working life, and a position that she loved and took pride in. Reading was always Joan's and Ray's first love, and a good book was never too far from hand.

Anna is now at the same University that Joan worked in, and visits the same library every day as part of her studies. When Anna found out that Joan worked there she was thrilled. As Anna loves the quiet atmosphere and the history that the library has. On their first meeting, Joan shared her knowledge and history of the building, which Anna found fascinating.

All too soon, Anna had to go. Anna was in the middle of exams, but is looking forward to catching up with Joan finding out more about her extraordinary life.

If you can spend just two hours once a week volunteering with us, you too could help older people like Joan to continue to access local facilities and carry on with their passions, hobbies and engage with others.
